Pulau Langkawi - Malaysia

LANGKAWI

HISTORY OF LANGKAWI

The legendary island of Langkawi that comprises of 99 islands has stirred the imagination of innumerable people who have taken keen interest in the history of the land. The land which presently belongs to the Malaysia's Kedah state has innumerous legends and folk tales associated with it.

Origin of the name

The name Langkawi can be divide into two parts that includes 'Lang' and 'Kawi'. The word 'Lang' comes from the Malaya word 'Helang' which means eagle. In the past days the land was a home to innumerable eagles. 'Kawi' is the Sanskrit word for marble, which is found in excess in this part of Malaysia. Both these words together joined to form the word 'Helangkawi' which ultimately became as Langkawi. Another reference found in the book of Tun Mohamed Zahir's named 'The Legends of Langkawi' refers that the place got its name from the twin words 'Langka' and 'Wi'. While the former means beauty in Sanskrit, the latter stands for innumerable. As such the word actually stands to signify many beautiful islands.

Langkasuka kingdom

Langkawi is believed to have its relation to the kingdom of Langkasuka which has its connections with the Malaya 'negeri alang kah suka'. Though scanty record can be found wit regards to the origin of the dynasty, a Chinese Liang dynasty records states that the kingdom of Langgasu had its origin in the 1st century AD.
The capital of the kingdom is located in the foothills of the Kedah Peak. Popular belief is that the kingdom came to existence when the Hindu king Bagatta paid a tribute to the Chinese king.

Mahsuri

Many acknowledge Mahsuri to be the sole reason for the success of Langkawi. As known from the legend the rule of Sultan Abdullah Mukarram Shah II saw the arrival of a man named Pandak Maya. After eating some magical grain his wife gave birth to a beautiful daughter who was named as Mahsuri. But after marrying Mat Deris, the son of the chief of Langkawi, she was accused of adultery. False accusations led her to the death bed.
It is believed that when she was stabbed white blood gushed out just to prove her innocence. As such the land was cursed. To counter it a mausoleum was erected and the family was welcomed back to the island.

Siamese attack

The years following Mahsuri's death saw the Siamese attack the land in 1821. In order to fight the enemies Dato Kerma ordered the burning of a village granary, remnants of which are still present today. This incident was succeeded by a host of misfortunes that fell on the land.

British rule

After the Sultan of Kedah ruled for a long time the land came under the British rule for a brief spell of time during the colonial period. The Anglo- Siamese treaty of 1909 transferred the land to the British who retained as rulers till Langkawi achieved its independence.

Thai monarchy

When the bloody World War II was continuing, Langkawi came under the control of Thai influence. When the war ended the land was resided by a large number pf pirates who find the forests of the land an excellent hide-out.

Recent developments

Progress till the 1970s was to a limited extend. In the mid 1980s when the land was relieved of its curses of seven generation, the government took special promotional plans and programmers to promote the place as a popular tourist destination.
Today boasts of its modern infrastructure and advanced technology that are a major driving force of the land.

Though the land has been relieved of its curses, the legends and the tales associated with the land shall continue ever to fascinate the people.

INTRODUCTION

Langkawi Island / Pulau Langkawi

Langkawi island is an archipelago of 104 islands lying in the north western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The exact location of these tropical islands is at the site where the Straits of Malacca meets the waters of the Andaman Seas. The largest of these islands is called Langkawi Island and is bigger than the Penang Island. The other islands in this group are Island of Pregnant Maiden (Pulau Dayang Bunting), Lion Island (Pulau Singa Besar) and Beras Basah Island. The smallest of these islands are atolls roughly the size of an ordinary house!

Langkawi Island / Pulau Langkawi

Langkawi is coined from the Malay words Lang and Kawi. Lang is a brown eagle and Kawi is a local manganese stone. The ancient fishermen must have seen eagles flying clutching the manganese stones! A giant monument of a brown eagle clutching the manganese stone greets all visitors to Langkawi near the Kuah Jetty. The main tourist attractions of Langkawi Island is its virgin white sandy beaches. The beaches have very gentle continental slope and the water is crystal clear.

Langkawi Island / Pulau Langkawi

This island is unique in the sense that it has so many legendsand myths associated with it.Langkawi Island is therefore also called Pulau Lagenda or Legendary Island. The most talked about legend is that of Mahsuri who is said to have laid a curse on this island for seven generations.Luckily the period of this curse is over now and Langkawi Island is fast becoming an internationally recognised tourist destination.

The government of Malaysia has declared the entire Langkawi Island as a duty free zone. Hence this island is also termed Duty Free Island. All goods sold in this island are exempted from government tax. Therefore this Legendary Island is a haven for the shoppers. You only need to stay in Langkawi for a minimum of 48 hours to take back home a reasonable amount of tax free goods.

Langkawi Island is located just off the coast of North Western Malaysia, about 30 km from Kuala Perlis and 51 km from Kuala Kedah and close to Thailand. The archipelago of Langkawi contains 99 islands during high tide whereas during low tide, the number of islands can be as many as 104. Sanctuary of some of the most ancient rainforests in the world, they are teeming with exotic flora and fauna. Langkawi Island itself is the largest among the archipelago, measuring about 478.5 sq km, is the only one with any real settlement. It fringed by lovely beaches scattered along its coast. The island is still very much a rural landscape with villages and paddy fields.

From Penang to Langkawi the ferry takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. The island is also a stopover for Star Cruises, one of the largest luxury cruise lines in the world.

Getting Around Langkawi

By Car, By Motorbike, By Bicycle

Langkawi has a network of roads that are currently being upgraded stage-by-stage. Still, it is easy to get around by taxis but the fares lie a little on the pricey side as Langkawi is after all, a tourist destination. You can choose to rent your own vehicles or take a taxi, whichever is most convenient.

BY CAR

After ascending from the ferry, numerous car rental agents will usually swarm around the Kuah jetty exit, peddling their cars at various prices. Prices can start from RM30 a day for a compact car and deposits can range anywhere from RM50 to 100. Note that this only applies during low season. Expect to much more, up to RM80 plus for car rentals during peak periods.

Alternatively, you can make arrangements for a car in Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis with one of many car rental agents waiting around the ferry counters and then pick up your transport upon reaching the island.

Cars can also be rented from booths at the airport.

BY MOTORBIKES

Motorbikes (especially scooters) and bicycles are also available for rent. Motorbikes can go for up to RM25 per day during the peak seasons but they are still cheaper than renting a car. Always ensure you wear a helmet as it is required by law and also for common-sense safety. Usually, they are not strict in seeing a valid license.

BY BUS

You can choose to rough it out and wait for a bus instead, but their stops are limited to a few places and the wait is long. There is a bus station in front of the City Bayview Hotel and they run from the jetty to the centre of town. The only other destination for buses is Pantai Cenang. However buses are few.

BY TAXI

This is the most convenient way of getting around but it suffers from the drawback of being expensive. A short trip can easily cost you up to RM15. However, you don’t have to pay deposits and you can charter the taxi for the day to bring you around and wait for you while visiting places around the island. Taxis are most often found mulling around the jetty airport exits but it is relatively easy to flag down a cab anywhere across the island.

Rice Museum Laman Padi Langkawi

After enjoying the beautiful sceneries at the Awana Porto Malai Langkawi resort, we drove to Laman Padi -- the Rice Museum at Pantai Cenang.

Laman Padi Langkawi is sort of a padi Hall of Fame, a tribute to the staple diet of almost all of Asia. Here, you can experience a sampling of anything that goes into the cultivation, nurturing and harvesting of rice, or better known as padi in Malay.

Warisan Gallery At Laman Padi Langkawi

There is a museum within the complex that showcases all the traditional technology and paraphernalia used in rice planting and harvesting, especially those practiced in Kedah and Langkawi. You can also see & touch the tools like fish traps made of bamboo and replicas of traditional rice-based foods.

Laman Padi Langkawi

Zaly got confused with the signboard and drove straight to the back of the Laman Padi Langkawi. This was where we discovered a serene (and real!) green rice fields. There were also chickens running around, the orang-orang (dummy to chase birds) and some blood-hungry leeches! Urgh....

It's not that I never see a real rice field before -- come on, I grew in a village with rice fields surrounding the area. But, I was never been so close to a rice field as I did that day. Mainly because I hate the little blood-sucking monsters (the leeches)... ha..ha..ha!

After capturing some great pictures of the green rice fields, we drove back to the parking lot near the guard house. Fuyoh! The weather was getting hotter that day. Luckily, we brought a few bottles of mineral water in the car. So... no fear of getting dehydrated.

Real Farmers Working On Real Rice Fields

We walked to the entrance of the first Rice Museum building, and noticed this man (a farmer), working on a small plot of rice field located on the right side of the entrance. I greeted him and asked him to pose for a photo.

Pak cik, nak ambil gambar! -- Uncle, let's take a picture!

And, he willingly did so nicely!

The Friendly Farmer @Rice Museum Langkawi

We climbed a few stairs to the first floor. I stopped to look at a notice board where a few handwritten notes, praising the Laman Padi & it's restaurant were posted. The notes were written by previous tourists of the Rice Museum. Most of them liked the food served at the Laman Padi Cuisine & Cafe, and said will come back for more!

Multi-Tiered Rooftop Rice Garden

We proceeded to the Roof Top Garden, where we saw a different type of rice growing in mini rice fields. You can touch & feel the texture of the rice's leaf, but beware of the leeches! Though, that day I only saw a small little leech on the roof top rice field.

I managed to took a nice picture of farmers planting the rice in lower ground rice field, located on the left side of a lotus pond. Lotus pond in a rice field? Were my eyes playing tricks on me?

But, it was true. There was a beautiful lotus pond in the middle of the rice field. You can have a closer look at the lotus (known as teratai in Malay) pond by walking on the bridge crossing the pond. The white bridge is located next to a pigeon's house and a batik-making workshop.

The Heritage Gallery - Rice Museum

At the back of the complex, was the Rice Museum itself, just next to another restaurant. Oppss... I forgot the name of this restaurant. Hmmph! I believed we were the first two visitors of the Rice Museum that day.... The receptionist was still not there, but the door was already opened. So... feeling adventurous.... we just walked in (after signing the guest book) and explore the museum!

There was a signboard saying that camera was not allowed in the Rice Museum. But, rules are meant to broken, right? No fear! Ha..ha..ha! Switching my Olympus E500 DSLR camera's flash off, I managed to captured the exhibits in the museum. Hmmm... naughty me!

The Rice Museum has only a small gallery showcasing the traditional tools of rice planting during the old days. And also a clear description of each tool, with highlights on some modern ways too. The dummies were also adorned with the traditional clothing of farmers.

Upon exiting the Rice Museum gallery, I noticed a spa at the back of the museum's building. A spa next to a rice field? Nope... my eyes were fine & not playing any tricks. It was a Malay spa known as Nawa Sari Spa. If you happen to be in Pantai Cenang, you can rejuvenate yourself at the spa.

That's it! A tour to the Laman Padi Langkawi took us just one hour. While walking from the Rice Museum gallery to the car park, I saw the above smiling stones. Perhaps, the stones were painted by those learning to paint batik at the small batik workshop. Nice job!
